RESEARCH PROJECT, 2024, WEST PAPUA
JAYA is a project dedicated to West Papua where Giorgia has developed researches about climate change, the effects of tourism, and pollution in marine and terrestrial ecosystems, from Raja Ampat coral reef to Waisai rainforest to the mountain slopes of Central Papua. During the months she spent there, in collaboration with and with the participation of local communities, Giorgia created a series of works and video interviews dedicated to marine and terrestrial habitats, vital to the local community and to planet’s balance. The ecosystems are threatened by climate change and the advent of tourism, plastic pollution, and logging lobbies. In the video interviews, Giorgia gives voice to various indigenous and western people who live and work to safeguard habitats and territories and protecting the populations of this area of Southeast Asia, recording and archiving diverse testimonies about the current situation.
An important chapter of JAYA project includes the collaboration with The SEA People – Orang Laut, a team of marine biologists who, together with the local community, work to protect and restore the coral reef inside Raja Ampat National Park. These scientific operations, as in other places around the world, are having positive effects both on the protection of the reef itself and in training and educating the local community about the importance of the marine and coastal ecosystem which is related to the local population itself. Giorgia Severi supports The Sea People – Orang Laut through a fundraising, devolving 50% of the income (out of taxes) from the sale of a series artworks developed in situ, inspired to corals and mangroves.
Beyond developing awareness projects on ecological and environmental issues, one of Giorgia Severi Studio’s goals is to actively contribute to protect biodiversity and ecosystems by supporting the local and scientific community, like through this project. JAYA project infact raises funds for the protection and restoration of Raja Ampat coral reef in West Papua in collaboration with The SEA People – Orang Laut, a team of marine biologists and researchers who, together with the local community, work to protect, safeguard, and restore the reef. JAYA project provides donations to support scientific operations through the sale of ceramic sculptures and multiples created by the artist, inspired by mangroves and corals observed and studied on site.
JAYA è il progetto dedicato alla Papua Occidentale dove Giorgia ha eseguito ricerche sul cambiamento climatico, l’effetto del turismo, l’inquinamento negli ecosistemi marini e terrestri dalla barriera corallina di Raja Ampat, alla foresta tropicale di Waisai fino ai pendii delle montagne in Papua Centrale. Nei mesi trascorsi in loco, in collaborazione e con la partecipazione delle comunità locali, Giorgia realizza un ciclo di opere e video interviste dedicati a questi habitat marini e terrestri importantissimi per l’equilibrio del pianeta e per la popolazione locale. Gli ecosistemi sono minacciati dal cambiamento climatico e dall’avvento del primo turismo, dalla plastica e dalle lobby del legname. Nelle video interviste infatti, Giorgia dà voce a diverse persone indigene e occidentali che vivono e lavorano per salvaguardare habitat e territori e tutelare le popolazioni di questa area del sud-est asiatico, registrando e archiviando differenti testimonianze sull’attuale stato delle cose.
Un capitolo importante del progetto JAYA include la collaborazione con The SEA People – Orang Laut, un team di biologi marini che insieme alla comunità locale, si occupano della salvaguardia e restauro della barriera corallina nel Parco Nazionale di Raja Ampat. Operazioni di natura scientifica che, come in altri luoghi del mondo, stanno avendo effetti positivi sia per la tutela della barriera stessa che nella formazione ed educazione della comunità locale riguardo l’importanza dell’ecosistema marino e costiero che è strettamente relazionato alla popolazione locale. Giorgia Severi ha deciso di supportare The SEA People – Orang Laut attraverso una raccolta fondi, devolvendo il 50% del ricavato dalla vendita di opere realizzate in situ, ispirate a coralli e mangrovie.
Oltre a sviluppare progetti di sensibilizzazione sul tematiche ecologiche e ambientali, uno degli obbiettivi di Giorgia Severi Studio è contribuire attivamente alla tutela della biodiversità e degli ecosistemi, supportando la comunità locale e scientifica, come nel caso di questo progetto. JAYA raccoglie fondi per la salvaguardia e il restauro della barriera corallina di Raja Ampat in Papua Occidentale in collaborazione con The SEA People – Orang Laut, un team di biologi marini e ricercatori, che, insieme alla comunità locale, si occupano della tutela, salvaguardia e restauro della barriera corallina. Il progetto JAYA prevede infatti donazioni per il supporto delle operazioni scientifiche attraverso la vendita di multipli e sculture in ceramica realizzate dall’artista ispirandosi a mangrovie e coralli osservati e studiati in loco.
