L’opera Albedo, realizzata appositamente per la mostra Beyond Landscape, si inserisce in un percorso ormai pluriennale dal titolo Antenati (dedicato a montagne, vulcani, alberi e foreste. Anche in questo caso, Giorgia Severi si è messa in cammino verso un luogo che sta cambiando molto velocemente posto ad un’altitudine che varia tra i 2700 e i 3000 metri, il Ghiacciaio Presena da tempo afflitto da un fenomeno di scioglimento importante. Dal 2008 una grande parte del ghiacciaio (detta “Il Ginocchio”) viene letteralmente coperta con un telone geotessile in grado di isolare il ghiaccio dal calore solare e di rallentarne, almeno parzialmente, il processo di disgelo. Utilizzando il medesimo materiale, Giorgia Severi ha riprodotto una porzione di ghiacciaio documentando un fenomeno quasi unico, la corsa ai ripari cercando di contrastare il ritiro irreversibile dei ghiacciai che va avanti da anni. Pur partendo dal presupposto che l’azione antropica sul surriscaldamento globale gioca un ruolo fondamentale nel processo di riduzione e di scomparsa dei ghiacciai, con l’opera Ghiacciaio Presena l’artista evidenzia come questi fenomeni possano corrispondere e coincidere anche con la fine naturale di un’era glaciale e dunque di un periodo storico che inevitabilmente porterà al loro ritiro e successivamente alla rigenerazione come è già accaduto diverse volte.  Si tratta di un momento estremamente significativo, la registrazione di qualcosa che prima o poi muterà o scomparirà, l’atteggiamento è proprio di un restauratore.

Albedo has been created specifically for the exhibition Beyond Landscape, and is part of a multi-year journey entitled Ancestors dedicated to mountains, volcanoes, trees and forests. Also in this case, Giorgia Severi set out towards a place that is changing very quickly at an altitude between 2700 and 3000 meters, where Presena Glacier has long been afflicted by an important melting phenomenon. Since 2008 a large part of the glacier (called “The Knee”) is literally covered with a special geotextile fabric, which is able to isolate the ice from solar heat and slowing down, at least partially, the melting glacier process. Using the same material, Giorgia Severi has reproduced a portion of the glacier documenting this phenomenon, the race for shelter trying to counteract the irreversible retreat of the glaciers that has been going on for years. Aware about the anthropic action on global warming plays a fundamental role in the process of reduction and disappearance of glaciers, with the work Presena Glacier the artist highlights how these phenomena can correspond and coincide with the natural end of an ice age and therefore of a historical period that will inevitably lead to their withdrawal and subsequently to regeneration as has already happened several times. It is an extremely significant moment, recordings about something which sooner or later will change or disappear, the attitude of care that is proper to a restorer.
